Exciting new Research Using Video Games for Stroke Recovery

How I wish this had been an option during my rehab.  Rehab is work, so why not mix it up with something fun! It reminds me of my horse therapy or playing golf.  Riding a horse or playing golf strengthens your trunk and arm muscles while your mind is focused on the enjoyment.  Sure my golf swing was off as my balance was challenged, but I’m a whole lot better now and play a decent round of golf.  Appreciate these new tools and start having some fun.  Welcome to the next generation of rehab.

ScienceDaily (Apr. 8, 2011) — Virtual reality and other video games can significantly improve motor function in stroke patients, according to research from St. Michael’s Hospital. Patients who played video games, such as Wii and Playstation, were up to five times more likely to show improvements in arm motor function compared to those who had standard therapy.

Not yet …. but want to! Just give me some foot pedals for flying or race cars and a steering wheel! So what if I drive into a virtual wall a few million times before making the entire race! It’s all that virtual practicing before virtually hitting the guy in the next car that counts, right?

This is just one more thing that helps get us better. I still like the balloon badmitton!

While this video gaming rehab is for those with some movement, I want others with little or no movement to understand that “Return” comes as a result of keeping the blood vessels open, exercising, eating alkaline foods, staying hydrated, and keeping positive. You must drink enough (alkaline) water to allow you to take enough medicine to heal. Staying positive helps keep those blood vessels open. Returns are very individual but typically personality, spirits, energy, and memory first then legs, feet, arms and hands. So listen to your PT and do the homework!
Ask your Neurologist for a TCD (Trans-Cranical Dopler) of your brain blood flow every few months and what can be done to improve it.

    • I believe the games have different levels so those with little to no movement could benefit. The idea, as you said is to open the blood vessels and create new neurological pathways in the brain. Gaming stimulates the nerves while enjoying something fun. Sure beats balloon badminton. :)
Therapy is work, but a little fun in the mix is a good thing!
